Ministry Resume

My ministry experience on a timeline

PACIFIC COAST CHURCH (2022-PRESENT)

Executive Pastor — I oversee the staff, ministries (adults, students, kids), pastoral care, counseling, support groups, pre-marital counseling, facilities, special events, launched a new preschool, on the preaching team, etc.

MARINERS CHURCH (2020-2022)

High School Pastor — I began working at Mariners two weeks before the COVID shutdown—it was a wild ride, to say the least! Once we were through the pandemic, I transitioned to a new ministry because I was looking for a greater challenge than what the senior pastor had in mind for high school strategy.

PASTORS.COM (2019-2020)

Managing Editor — It was great to be at Saddleback Church again! My job was to create resources, blogs, and emails based on Rick Warren’s content. After three years of being away from ministry in the local church, I was ready to go back. I transitioned from Pastors.com to go back into high school ministry and work with my best friend, Doug Fields.

LIVING ON THE EDGE (2017-2019)

Director of Discipleship Resources — My job was to create Bible studies, online classes, and adapt Chip Engram’s content into resources. I transitioned because I was beginning to travel twice a month (and was encouraged to move to Atlanta), and Pastors.com offered me a position.

NEW LIFE CHURCH (2014-2016)

Family Ministry Pastor — Oversaw high school, junior high, kids, preschool, men and women. I was also on the preaching team. I started this ministry with the shared understanding that I’d be on the “short list” to be the next senior pastor. Tragically, the senior pastor died of cancer within my first year on staff, and the board ended up wanting someone who was a life-long Nazarene. This transition was painful! Not because of their decision but because of how it was handled.

NEWPORT MESA CHURCH (2013-2014)

Associate Pastor — In this role, I oversaw spiritual formation, missions, and was on the teaching team. I joined this church to serve the senior pastor. The board removed him from leadership, so I moved on.

DOWNLOAD YOUTH MINISTRY.COM (2011-2014)

Co-Founder — Created a for-profit organization to resource youth workers that provided trench-tested, high-quality, low-cost resources.

MARINERS CHURCH (2011-2013)

High School Pastor—My responsibilities were similar to Saddleback (see below), although much smaller in scale. I transitioned out because I wasn’t a fit for what they wanted. From my point of view, they wanted a manager more than a leader. This was a painful transition!

GROUP PUBLISHING (2010-2011)

Associate Publisher—Created youth worker training and edited new products. I transitioned because my travel was increasing and I was encouraged to move to Colorado.

SADDLEBACK CHURCH (2007-2010)

Pastor of Regional Campuses / Pastoral Management Team—Designed and implemented regional campus ministry. I managed a team of 25+ people and a budget of upwards of 4M.

After 1 year, I was promoted to the leadership team of 7 and reported directly to Rick Warren.

After 2 years, I was given two new teams to combine: ministry mobilization and local missions.

Pastor of Ministry

Combining two teams, merging processes, and determining new priorities. Encouraged hurting volunteer leaders.

Pastor of Discipleship

After 3 years, Rick moved me from Ministry to Discipleship and I led Lead spiritual formation process. Monthly taught class 201 (spiritual disciplines). Weekly taught systematic theology.

NEWSONG CHURCH (2006-2007)

Associate Pastor—I was hired to create a strategy to transition their 2000-person church into a network of house churches, which was wild! There is a lot more to this story … but it was all good stuff!

SADDLEBACK CHURCH (1995-2006)

High School Minister — Created dozens of self-paced discipleship tools. Wrote small group curriculum and created a four-year plan. Managed small group ministry for 3 years (70+ groups) until hiring my replacement. Shared in pastoral duties (weddings, funerals, pastoral care, etc.). Organized and lead Saddleback Church’s largest mission trip for 9 years (600+ people). Coordinated several large trips and special events. Led small groups, discipled students directly. Created dozens of processes with successful implementation. Interfaced with church leadership. Preached Sundays (800+). Trained and mentored adult volunteers. Trained youth workers at Purpose Driven Conferences. Created a student leadership program. After a few years, I was promoted to High School Pastor.

High School Pastor — Managed a team of 12 full-time staff plus 5 interns. Responsible for all the programs, special events, etc. (800+ students in weekly attendance). Hired several key positions. Regularly reviewed staff and interns. Managed annual ministry program budget.
